Canola

Tekirdağ is one of the provinces with the most cultivated areas according to its area. Süleymanpaşa is one of the luckiest districts of Tekirdağ in terms of agricultural areas. The rate of arable land is 80 percent. 'Onions, watermelon, cherries and grapes' are priority. In addition to these priority products, rye production is among the priority products grown in our district.

Canola (Brassica napus Oleifera sp.) ranks third in terms of production among oilseed crops such as sunflower, soybean, cotton and peanut as a vegetable oil source. Its annual production in the world is around 22 million tons. It was brought to our country with the name of rapeseed in 1960 with the immigrants from the Balkans and found a cultivation area in Thrace. In our country, canola, also known as rapiska, rapitsa, rapeseed, has two physiological periods as winter and summer. It is an oil plant. It is an important oil plant with 38-50% oil and 16-24% protein in canola grain. The erucic acid content of 45-50%, which used to be called rapeseed in the past, has been reduced to 0% by breeding studies, and the plant has been brought back into production for the need for vegetable oil.
